It is with great excitement that we announce TWO SCHOLARSHIPS for the Class of 2011! We will choose one scholarship based on need and one based on merit. To apply, request an application through e-mail to us through the "clients" link on our website or e-mail us directly: jon@jonathanbetz.com

All applications must be received by May 1st, and winners will be selected by May 20th. Each scholarship recipient will receive their session experience free and have $450 of studio credit toward their order!

Meet Sarah Viera - Wedding Planner!

We had the privilege of spending time with Sarah Viera this morning. We met her initially last summer and then connected to learn more about her business and the services she provides to brides. We were very impressed by her professionalism and loved how evident her passion is for serving brides! We are so excited to partner with her and promote her services. We know how many details go into a wedding and how many different plans come together on the wedding day itself, so we're thrilled to know such a warm, caring, and enthusiastic person to whom we can refer brides who really want the peace of mind from and partnership with a planner. Oh, and how could we not love her when she also has a daughter named Natalie?!?!

Back Home from our Photography Convention...

We arrived back home late last night from our WPPI Convention. It was great, and we're back and overflowing with new ideas and energy! We flew in and out of the Colorado Springs Airport (we love how small it is and so close to home!) and were greeted by Natalie and Tyler and Grandma. Jon and I really enjoyed our time as just the two of us but seeing Natalie and Tyler really made it great to be home again! Even Tyler's upset, hungry cries during the car ride home were somewhat heartwarming after being away from the little guy! And Natalie's excited smiles and "Mommy! Daddy!" brought huge smiles to us as well. It's true that being away gave us new appreciation for the day-to-day (and even exhausting!) moments because it's out of these moments that the blessing of family comes to life and memories are made. And we feel so blessed to be able to do what we love and photograph your lives...from the day-to-day to the once-in-a-lifetime.

Oh, and how crazy is this...we returned with so much excitement for some of our ideas that we were up until 3 am putting a few things in motion...more to come on that SOON!

Leaving Las Vegas...

WPPI 2010

We are currently here in Las Vegas, NV, for our annual Wedding and Portrait Photographers International (WPPI) convention! Every year this is such a fantastic trip of learning and energizing our business with new excitement and ideas. Last year Natalie came with us, and that worked out okay (she wasn't walking yet!) but we did know that it would not work so well in the future...and that was back before we knew our family was going to add another little one before this year's convention! So, we brought out Grandma to watch Natalie and Tyler, and Jon and I got to come out as just the two of us! It's our first trip as parents without bringing the kids, and it's been a really nice and blessed time to relax a little and really focus on all the great learning opportunities.

We are currently exactly half way through our time here since arriving LATE Sunday night (which ended up being Monday morning thanks to a VERY delayed flight!) and beginning with our convention experience Monday morning. We are here through Thursday and are excited to return to work Friday full of all our new ideas! And we're VERY excited to see our little ones again Thursday night!

We recently did a commercial shoot for one of our families, the Fowlers. Carissa and I are both all about cloth diapers and their many benefits for the little ones. Carissa feels so strongly about them that she's created a full length educational DVD for families to learn all about cloth diapers. The DVD is in final stages, and our shoot was to capture a cover image. Her website is still in the finishing stages, but feel free to check it out here. She'll come to see the images this next Monday, so we can't show you the shot yet (3 babies involved!!), but we wanted to share a couple of our Natalie, who we volunteered as another child for the shoot. These were during her "drink break" and were especially cute and funny since we had her in the cow print diaper!!

We are so excited to announce that Natalie is having a little brother come November! We had our "Baby Cakes" party last Wednesday after having the big ultrasound earlier that day. The tech sealed the gender in an envelope which we then took to a friend who frosted the middle layer of our baby cake with pink or blue. The outside of the cake was just white, so it wasn't until we cut the cake that we found out it's little Tyler in there!!

Twin Lakes Colorado!

We did a wedding a couple weeks ago now in the grand town of Twin Lakes, Colorado and on our way back home Lindsay said "is that a BEAR?" I quickly looked and said YES and stopped the car as fast as a honda civic can stop, jumped out popped the trunk, unzipped my camera bag and pulled out my camera trying to get the right exposure all in about 30 seconds before the bears were spooked enough and chugged their way back to the trees. I wrapped off like 4 or 5 shots and these were the best that I got from the road side.

We had the absolute privilege to do the cover photography for Ricky Swuem, an amazing jazz saxophone player who just received his first recording contract under Origin Records! He recently had his first of 3 CD release parties down in Old Colorado City. We had such a great time and so enjoyed meeting his wife, Julie. His music is just great and all original. Congratulations, Michael & Jenine!!

Michael & Jenine were married June 6th, and we just saw them last night for their cocktail Viewing Party! We had a fantastic time with them and their friends, Dan & DeeDee! Michael & Jenine's wedding was at the Black Forest Bed & Breakfast. It was this perfect, rustic, very Colorado place with the most perfect view of Pikes Peak from their outdoor ceremony site. We absolutely have loved our time with them. They decided to have a special moment just between the two of them before the ceremony which gave us the opportunities to get all these fantastic bride & groom pictures with them off site. Business Expo 2009

We participated in the Colorado Springs Chamber of Commerce Business Expo at the Phil Long Center in May! This was our second year to participate, and as always, it was a great time to meet other great businesses and people in our community. This year, we expanded and offered professional headshots at our booth to anyone who wanted one. Natalie came with us and was quite the trooper! The Expo lasted from 10 am-6 pm, so it was quite a long day for her to be away from home. It was inevitable that she'd need a nap, and we got creative with a "bed" for her...

Falcon High School Senior Jordan was a brave soul to bear the 12 degree weather while we did his senior pix. It was SO cold and he was brave enough to go out with only a tee-shirt and jeans on! Jordan also introduced me to free running which is a very extreme way to run and jump off buildings and run up and flip off trees. Thank you Jordan for a great day!

This past Friday I had the chance to volunteer and provide photography for the St.Baldricks Foundation! It is a great organization that focuses on kids who have cancer, the organization is the world's largest 100% volunteer-driven fundraising program for childhood cancer! You can find out more here . Teams, groups and individuals raise and donate money to support the cause and then get their heads shaved bald! There were a team of Colorado Springs photographers who volunteered their time to help make this day great! Ted Mehl another Colorado Springs photographer of A Better Image was the team organizer for the event and it was such a blessing to be able to provide for an organization like this. Thanks for making this a great day and we are looking forward to next year!

Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep...

We are honored to be serving this amazing ministry that was started by photographer Sandy Puc in Denver. The organization now serves families across our country and even internationally, and over 5000 photographers participate. This ministry provides photography, free of charge, to families who are experiencing the loss of a newborn. We recently applied to nilmdts at our WPPI convention, and we are blessed by this opportunity not only because it allows us to give back to our community with the gifts we have been given, but also because we have personally seen the value of these photographs within our own family. In 2006, we experienced the loss of our first nephew who was born at just over 21 weeks and passed after touching all of our lives for just 8 days. Jon was able to provide photography and beautiful, priceless portraits of Baby Sam for his brother and sister-in-law. These pictures are the only ones they will have to remember their beautiful baby boy, and while it has been a long healing process, we are so glad to have been there to give them this gift. WPPI 2009

WOW! We recently returned from our annual Wedding and Portrait Photographers, International (WPPI) Convention in Las Vegas! This was our 3rd year to attend, and each year we gain so much. This year we really enjoyed the opportunities to network more and more with photographers from around the country. This was the first year for the convention to be at MGM Grand...the convention keeps growing in attendance, and over 10,000 photographers come to WPPI yearly! It really is a crucial piece to our own studio here since we are committed to offering the highest quality of photography and products to Colorado Springs. Attending WPPI keeps us learning and growing and is part of our commitment to YOU that we truly care about what we do!

Here we are at WPPI and the MGM Grand...

We arrived early to attend the Business Institute for our second time. It's basically a fantastic day of speakers to provide great tips and tools for the business side of things. We feel it has been an essential part of our studio's growth since we arrived here just over 2 years ago!

On Sunday evening, we enjoyed the official opening of WPPI. It included a "mock wedding" where 5 of the top wedding photographers photographed the events and provided insight to everyone there on their own photographic style and approach to a wedding. Two of these photographers were Bambi Cantrell and Joe Buissink (both pictured below). Also, with them were Yervant & Denis Reggie.

Our daughter, Natalie, makes sure to read up on all the classes offered...

Throughout the week, there are many opportunities to attend Platform classes covering a wide variety of topics like photographic techniques, marketing, blogging (which is why we are going to do our best to be better at it!!), posing, and business structure.

Outside of the Platform Classes, the Trade Show is a HUGE part of convention. It literally spans multiple ballrooms and includes HUNDREDS of vendors. We love the trade show because we get to meet in person with the various vendors we entrust with our work, and it also keeps us up-to-date with all the coming trends and products so that we can continue to offer our couples and families the very BEST available!

Natalie enjoys all there is to look at during the Trade Show (she also got quite a lot of attention from all the people)...

We really enjoyed attending the forum on the future of photography, moderated by Mark Zucker, President of Zookbinders (who we trust with our albums). Below, Skip Cohen, president of Rangefinder Magazine, talks with Tony Corbell.

On Monday night, Nikon hosted their BIG EVENT in the MGM Grand Arena. Blues Traveler gave a concert for all the WPPI attendees! It was really fun! We did leave early since Natalie was getting tired and it was also quite loud, but we definitely enjoyed the first part of their concert!

Just before the concert, we attended the VIP party and met a lot of well-known photographers. This is Cliff Mautner...

Beth & Scott - Shove Chapel

What a fun wedding to end our 2008 season! Beth & Scott's day was a gorgeous November day, and we just love the beauty of Shove Chapel. Beth is actually a friend of ours from a Small Group Bible Study we were in when we first arrived to Colorado Springs. They are the 3rd couple from the International Anglican Church here in town that have chosen us to be their photography team, so we loved getting to see one of our previous couples, Dan & Danita, on Beth & Scott's day! We also loved our time at their reception at Phantom Canyon Brewery. We've been there for dinners and local events but this was the first for a wedding reception. The food was excellent, and we love the great city views from that 3rd floor. Beth & Scott, we wish you all God's blessings as married life begins!

Grimm Family - Monument Valley Park

Ok folks this is a VERY fun family to photograph! The Grimm family and us we went downtown to Monument Valley Park (where we are frequently seen) and just took a walk around the park and started photographing at different spots. We had a blast with the boys Ivan & Drew as they were all about getting their pictures taken. (rare for boys!) And so we capitalized on it! Here are a couple shots...

Vaughn at 6 Months!

Vaughn did so great for his 6 month session! He was sitting up with confidence and smiling like crazy for the camera...I think we had 30 fantastic shots and were done within 15-20 minutes! We love the one with the huge smile-we love how it looks like he's singing his little heart out for us! Honestly, we could have posted his entire session they were all so great. How can baby portraits get much better than this?

Manny & Kim (Rock Stars!)

Ok for this e-session we did we had the creative wheels turning in the heads of Manny and Kim. I asked them if they had any ideas for their session, so they took a couple of days to think on it and came back with a whole adventure planned out. We went to one of their most special places up in the mountains where they love to go camping and hiking and just plain hang out and have fun! It was about a 45 minute drive up to the spot and the 4-wheel drive was a necessary feature needed to get there. Luckily we took our Trooper which made it a breeze! When we arrived to the spot I took a look around at beautiful mountains surrounding us and was simply in awe! We had the beautiful warm evening light ( God's light ) to look forward to and so we got started and this what I saw. Manny and Kim are due to be married in July of 2009! ( we are really looking forward to their day ) Thanks guys for a fun day in the mountains and for the privilege of photographing you! You guys are rock stars!

Obviously before Halloween we had the pleasure to photograph little Stella at the pumpkin patch in Monument Colorado for her festive fall 9 month pictures! It was a beautiful day for picking pumpkins! Thanks Stella for doing such a great job!
